The Wide Angle Youth Media Photo exhibit opened with a reception on April 23, 2024, at Hotel Revival in Mount Vernon. WAYM high school students took all the photographs during their fall and spring photography classes.

Sydney Allen led the students to explore portraiture as a response to an overall generational desire to be looked at less while remaining visible. The photos on view were the result of an exercise in which students were asked to make portraits without using the face or facial identifiers.

The images represent the Wide Angle cohort’s budding, innovative, and creative nature. The evocative portraits challenge viewers to interrogate their conceptions of the portraiture genre.

Through media arts education, Wide Angle Youth Media collaborates with and amplifies the voices of Baltimore youth to engage audiences across social divides. Their programs inspire creativity and instill confidence in young people, supporting them to navigate school, careers, and life.

If you missed seeing the images at Hotel Revival, the touring exhibition will be at Red Emma’s from July 9 through August 4, 2024. (Teri Henderson)

Since 2000, Wide Angle Youth Media has worked with thousands of youth across Baltimore City. Wide Angle Youth Media’s mission is to collaborate with and amplify the voices of Baltimore youth and engage across social divides. The organization accomplishes this through various media arts classes, including graphic design, digital storytelling, and photography.

“Camera shutter speed, aperture, and ISO can be changed for specific photography goals. Fast shutter speed captures fast motion without blur and small aperture settings create a blurred background,” Wide Angle told us. “By lowering their shutter speed and using colorful lights, students work in teams to draw in space and create an image. This project was inspired by DariusTwin aka Darren Pearson.”

They said the project is intended to teach participants teamwork and communication and encourage playfulness.

Wide Angle Youth Media is an organization that offers media arts education and amplifies the voices of Baltimore youth. Baltimore Beat is proud to feature these students’ artworks.

The students worked in teams to create these images, experimenting with digital DSLR camera settings to explore how light is recorded, lowering their shutter speeds, and using colorful lights — which generated these beautiful works.

This project was inspired by DARIUSTWIN, a vibrant light painting art project created by Californian artist Darren Pearson, who uses light, long exposure, and the night sky to create colorful, luminescent, and fantastic artworks.

Wide Angle Youth Media will offer free courses — including Advanced Video, Actor’s Workshop, Photography, and Stop Motion Animation — for high school students this fall. Registration is now open; all classes are free for participants, and students can earn up to $300 per semester while learning. (Teri Henderson)

Program Manager Beth Holladay said this project was inspired by identity, especially the way issues of identity show up in young people during the years they spend in middle school.

“It calls students in to consider how they identify themselves in different places, with different people. It also makes space for students to identify words or phrases that do not reflect their identity, and to include that in their piece,” she wrote. “This word-driven portraiture seeks to explore identity from multiple perspectives, with an emphasis on intersectional identities.”

“They analyzed contemporary media, discussed how representations reflect our community, and addressed pervasive and incorrect narratives.” Wide Angle Youth Media’s Communication Director Hannah Shaw told Baltimore Beat.

Each student chose one artwork that resonated with them from a virtual art gallery walk. Their prompt was to create an artistic response to their chosen artwork, using digital materials to generate a conversation between their work and the artists. (Teri Henderson)
