Jan. 18

OK, so pardon the touch of nostalgia here; I supposed everybody gets to a certain age and starts missing things or remembering things a certain way and I’m no different. But there’s a bit of a house music renaissance going on in the city right now by way of say, Teddy Douglass’ events at The Rockwell and other low-key dance nights—all of this despite the death of the Paradox. House never went anywhere here—I remember talking to Ultra Nate and King Tutt just as EDM was absorbing some 4/4 signifiers and they were both unconcerned and intrigued that it might raise profiles—but I think there’s hints of casual Red Maple vibes happening, and that’s a good thing. Dance music nights do not need to be a huge deal or a room stuffed full of people all night to be a party. This week, Mood2Soul, a dance night at Motor House (or since I’m getting nostalgic here, the space that was once Load Of Fun) presented by house label Better On Foot and held down by Discuji, featuring Washington D.C.’s Thomas Blondet, who makes house that splits the difference between the accessibility of say, DFA, and the hard edges of Club Nervous Records. 8 p.m., The Motor House, 120 W. North Ave., (410) 637-8300, motorhousebaltimore.com, free. (Brandon Soderberg)

Marc Avon Evans

Jan. 19

Soulful house music—or OK, soul-adjacent house music; all house music is soulful—is a speciality in Baltimore, dating back to one of the city’s biggest house exports, production crew the Basement Boys. Marc Avon Evans is part of that history and keeps it moving along. On 2009’s ‘The Way You Love Me,’ a grown folks dance hit presented by former Basement Boy DJ Spen and his crew The Muthafunkaz, Evans floats above a lithe house beat and sounds like some hybrid of David Ruffin and Harold Melvin (lots of people compare him to Donny Hathaway and OK, sure, that too, but there’s something grittier about Evans, I think). Last year he put out an EP with Steven Stone titled “Rhythm Romance” with Evans howling achingly over propulsive party beats (start with the track ‘Enough’). Evans `also does jazz, soul, R&B, and whatever else and keeps in the scene as a co-host of Peace & A Cup Of Joe’s Acoustic Thursdays. You’ll hear selections from all of his two decades in music at Creative Alliance—one of those “a night with”-style shows that only certain musicians’ depth and breadth can maintain. 8 p.m., Creative Alliance, 3134 Eastern Ave., (410) 276-1651, creativealliance.org, $15-$18. Jan. 19

If you’ve not heard Josh Stokes’ excellent album from last year, “Who Is Josh Stokes?,” you’ve maybe seen him around, working the music sometimes as part of Crown Conversations or DJing at the Motorhouse or drumming live for Abdu Ali—he’s on of the city’s most exciting musician all-around. Here’s what the Real News Network’s Eze Jackson said of ‘Say Word’ off Stokes’ album: ‘Say Word’ gives you a feel reminiscent of both Prince and George Clinton with synths that take you back to the mid ‘80s a bit. Josh Stokes is no clone, though. His voice and subject matter are all his own. . . . Stokes can handle almost any tempo or topic with the soul of a freaky Southern Baptist choir director who hits the city on the weekends to drink whiskey and party with harlots. His energy is almost Jimi Hendrix-reminiscent in that you wouldn’t expect someone so young to sound the way he does, belting out aged runs and harmonic backgrounds that you find yourself repeating over and over again.” This bill, by the way, is packed with similarly-minded musicians on the bill: Mahatma X, Pale Spring, Infinity Knives, and Alienood (who also curated the show). 9 p.m., E.M.P. Collective, 307 W. Baltimore St., facebook.com/EMPCOLLECTIVE, $8-$10. (Brandon Soderberg)

Lee “Scratch” Perry and the Subatomic Sound System

Jan. 21

Exploratory reggae producer Lee “Scratch” Perry, who took the genre and turned it translucent in the ’70s, has the kind of career where, you know, producing Bob Marley & The Wailers can be easily forgotten or put off to the side. In particular, there is his run throughout the ’70s both solo (“Super Ape” and its bonkers sequel “Return Of The Super Ape,” in particular) and producing for others—between 1976 and 1977 he produced Max Romeo’s “War Ina Babylon,” The Heptones’ “Party Time,” Junior Murvin’s “Police And Thieves,” George Faith’s “To Be A Lover,” and The Congos’ “Heart Of The Congos”—all reggae classics, all very different. That he is also, in a way, the godfather of lots of electronic dance music including dubstep—of both the brainy dweeby U.K. sort or the Amerikkkan Moby-on-boner-pills wubby kind—is another feather in his cap. Scratch’s latest album, released in the fall of last year and the one he is currently touring, is an extension of 1976’s classic “Super Ape.” Titled “Super Ape Returns To Conquer” and assisted by Subatomic Sound System, it’s an album-length medley of Scratch’s work, a dance-ready way to hear all his records melted together. Openers for Scratch tonight are The Forwards and Bobby Babylon. 7 p.m., The Ottobar, 2549 N. Howard St., (410) 662-0069, theottobar.com, $20. (Brandon Soderberg)

Marilyn Mosby Birthday Jam Session

Jan. 11

In a Baltimore Sun piece looking back at the devastating year of violence in the city, State’s Attorney for Baltimore Marilyn Mosby, along with Commissioner Kevin Davis and Mayor Catherine Pugh, gave the Sun some truly idiotic non-statements. “We are experiencing a new dimension of societal fracture in our city,” she said. “We have to come together to figure that out.” There aren’t enough upside down smiling emojis in the world, you know? There’s more here to Mosby, who on one hand charged the six officers in the death of Freddie Gray, and on the other hand, according to activists, has aggressively pursued Keith Davis Jr. and never reopened the Tyrone West case like she should have. I guess what I’m saying is if you want to look a little out of touch or elite, holding a kind of expensive “birthday jam session” for yourself at Soundstage is NAGL. Anyways, if you’re into Mosby, or organic, neo soul, funk, and blues, then come see Raheem DeVaughn with the Crossrhodes Band, Kindred the Family Soul, and the Crossrhodes Band’s Wes Felton. You can also pay $150 to meet Mosby. Maybe ask her what the heck that Sun quote means and why she, a person with a lot of power, can only say that, “We have to come together to figure that out,” and not you know, help figure it out. 7 p.m., Baltimore Soundstage, 124 Market Place, (410) 244-0057, baltimoresoundstage.com, $45-$55 ($150 for meet and greet/early entry). Ravel on the Rocks

Jan. 13

The noble attempts to get more people interested in classical music are really admirable, especially when they make some sense. My sense is that the problem here is not people are dumb now or not interested, but rather that elites and smarmy jerks have elevated the music to some “higher” level, like a lot of things, which intimidates and alienates lots of listeners. I am ostensibly a classical music n00b myself, but when I worked at a record store, I loved telling metal-buying teens that if they liked say, Sunn0))) they might like Wagner or Tomita’s druggy synth takes on Debussy. And sure, there’s the dubstep Beethoven or whatever bullshit where they just fuse a “cool” genre onto the allegedly uncool genre. Then there are things like this event where they just kind of organically add some other things to a night of classical. Basically, here you’ve got music from Ravel and Debussy played by the BSO paired with a chance to ponder some contemporaneous Impressionist paintings courtesy of  The Baltimore Museum of Art, followed by an after-party with gypsy jazz from Orchester Praževica. Also: booze! Lots of “culture” with the stakes lowered a little; sounds great. 7 p.m., Joseph Meyerhoff Symphony Hall, 1212 Cathedral St., bsomusic.org, $30-$99. (Brandon Soderberg)

Drums Of Life, Jan. 5 / Boat Burning: Music for 100 Guitars, Jan. 7

Multiples of the same instrument playing all at once provides a very specific sort of musical reward.

At the Windup Space this week, Drums Of Life, a trio of high-profile local musicians (Michael Lowry of Big In Japan and Future Islands, David Bergander of Celebration; and jazzbo Mike Kuhl), all drummers who eek out complex compositions using only percussion. We think of percussion as loud, tough, abrasive; but just by giving you drums and nothing much else, Drums Of Life by encourages nuance and aural relativism of what we hear. Harsh snares in this context might sound like the pitter-patter of rain from a new age record, and thump, bangs, clangs, and all the rest invoke the disorderly beauty of city noise.

At the 9:30 Club in Washington, D.C., rumbling improvisers Boat Burning brings 100 guitarists together to build a big scary beautiful sea of riffs, plucks, and strums exponentially growing, the confounding experience of a sound magnified rather than simply amplified. Boat Burning has been moving toward a 100 guitar sound for a while now. Last year, the group performed Music for 70 Guitars at the Black Cat and the only thing that seemed to stop them from getting even bigger was the size of available venues—they were not lacking guitarists willing to step into the mix. So they’ve moved to the larger 9:30 Club and can now add 30 more to the roster. And it’s also just a celebration of music in D.C.—every kind of guitar player from every kind of band is included.

Neither of these shows offer the singular thrill of abundance, to be clear. This is not the bowel-rumbling low-end of say, Sunn0))), or something like that where what bowls you over and gets you all meditative is just overwhelming sound, singular, mean, unwavering—not that there’s anything wrong with that. Rather, this is music as a pile, something to dig through and find what you need, while avoiding the often-dreaded solo: This is not about showing off or highlighting the individual, but what happens when groups of people—three or 100, it doesn’t matter—collectively get together and explore. (Brandon Soderberg)

Also playing with Drums Of Life are Hestina, Plake 64 & the Hexagrams, and Coffee Enema. 8 p.m., The Windup Space, 12 W. North Ave., thewindupspace.com, $10. Also playing with Boat Burning is Trinary System featuring Roger Miller of Mission Of Burma and the Alloy Orchestra (who live score a silent film at Maryland Film Fest each year). 8 p.m. The 9:30 Club, 815 V. St. N.W., Washington, D.C., (202) 265-0930, 930.com, $25.

Outcalls

Jan. 6

A couple issues ago, Maura Callahan met up with Melissa Wimbish and Britt Olsen-Ecker of Outcalls to discuss their track, ‘Pillcauzbee,’ a hypnotic track from their recent album “No Kings” that details an attempted sexual assault: “Every single time I try to walk away I feel real high/ What did you do/ It’s getting late and maybe I was thinking I should say goodbye/ Why can’t I move,” the two sing. A recent, dark and wubby remix by producer Drew Scott has spread the song to even more listeners and it aligns with a welcome and long-due reckoning about sexual assault and harassment, which permeates every element of culture, from the president (though he has still met no real repercussions), to rich moguls such as Harvey Weinstein, to the jerks at parties and shows that we’re all attending. It is happening all around us all the time, and Outcalls’ song operates as a way of exploring it and highlighting its ubiquity: It even creeps into catchy, brilliant electronic-tinged pop. Also on the bill with Outcalls are Amazing Bill and Petunia. 8 p.m., Metro Gallery, 1700 N. Charles St., (410) 244-0899, metrogallery.net, $10. (Brandon Soderberg)

Ja Rule. Screencap courtesy YouTube.

Ja Rule

Jan. 10

Pity Ja Rule a little. The gruff-voiced rap and bullshit artist of the early 2000s—who was briefly ubiquitous with club-attuned, catchy, diet, caffeine-free Tupac approximations that nevertheless really knocked—has had it tough. He was unfairly usurped by rap bully 50 Cent, who killed Ja’s career by questioning his street cred and criticizing how much Ja sang on his songs, only to then sing on all his own songs. Lately, Ja is best known for being rolled up into a funny Chris Rock bit about how his iPhone is gonna get him robbed (“God forbid someone’s trying to kill me and I can’t call for help because I was listening to Ja Rule”) and Dave Chappelle’s bit about celebrity worship in response to MTV phoning Ja Rule for his perspective on 9/11 (“Think when bad shit happens I’m like, ‘Oh my god this is terrible, could somebody please find Ja Rule, get hold of this motherfucker so I can get sense of all this”). Oh and then there was the disastrous Fyre Festival, which Ja had a whole lot to do with. He still has the hits though, so head to Soundstage and sing along. Ja needs the support. Also on the bill are Donnie Breeze, Duck Myers, and Jaymoney Hackett. 8 p.m., Baltimore Soundstage, 124 Market Place, (410) 244-0057, baltimoresoundstage.com, $25-$30. (Brandon Soderberg)
