As we head into our holiday break, we leave you with an issue full of the things we liked and disliked about the year 2023. Our best (and worst) roundup has our takes on things like policing, sports, city drivers, places to eat and drink, and local art. Here’s a preview: we are sticking beside basketball star Angel Reese and the Baltimore Orioles.

Our film critic, Dominic Griffin, made his own best and worst list. This year saw a lot of great films and a few really bad ones.

“The ‘Barbenheimer’ phenomenon signaled the possibility that theatrical releases not predicated upon superheroes or decades-old intellectual property could be critically and commercially successful again,” he wrote.

Finish the year strong with guidance from Iya Osundara’s December tarotscopes.

Also in this issue, Baltimore Courtwatch writes about the way language can be used to cover up systemic inequities in our criminal justice system. We have a poem from Writers in Baltimore Schools participant Tristen Rawlings titled “Bedroom.” Make sure to check our Arts and Culture calendar for fun things to do to mark the holiday season.

This will be our last issue for the year. We will be back on January 17, 2024. Thanks so much for reading, and happy holidays!
